Check This

Written by

It’s a fact that some people don’t trust technology. Many people still have a landline, still go to the bank in person, still read a physical newspaper. If you still write checks to pay your bills beware that thieves are targeting those checks, taking them, and taking your money.

Check washing is growing in popularity. Thieves will either steal your outgoing checks from your mailbox, or they’ll steal the keys to the blue USPS drop off boxes and take checks out of them. From there, they use chemicals to “wash” those checks, then write themselves a sum that comes straight out of your account.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself from these thieving asshats:

Never leave a check in your unlocked personal mailbox at your front door or driveway.

Even at an official blue mailbox, check the collection times. Drop off your checks then.

If possible, mail your checks from your local Post Office.

When writing your checks use a gel pen, not a ballpoint pen.

Write in black ink, not blue, which is harder to wash.

Pay bills electronically when possible.

Guitar Hero

Written by

As we wind down International Guitar Month, it's only fitting that we talk a little guitar-- especially since this local kid could become a legend one day.  Stow-Munroe Falls student, 17-year-old AJ Garduño rocked it hardcore during the school's talent show-- and won. The self-taught guitarst was gifted his first axe when he was in the fourth grade, and the rest is history. Check out his blistering, first-time-onstage, performance.

Otterly Fantastic

Written by

My latest animal obession is the river otter. They're so darn cute! I think it's the shape of their heads and their squeak-toy sounds that make me melt when I see one. And then when I read that we have river otters --living in our rivers-- and not just at the Akron Zoo, well, mind blown! Yes, I know river otters live in rivers. But I've never spotted one in its natural habit. Thank goodness Don Howdyshell was kayacking the Cuyahoga in Cuyahoga Falls by the Sheraton Suites. Because he saw a river otter. And now, I need to go hang out and see if I can spot him.

What should we name him? Or her?

Let's Wrestle!

Written by

My dear friend Jonas Hershberger passed away last year. He was a special dude. He had to listened to me at every radio station I've been at over the last decade+. He was an all-in kind of guy. If there was a station fundraiser, he'd donate what he could. He'd show up and support our events. He was a big fan of my husband's band, Ravenwood, and came out to as many shows as he could. Over the years, he battled many health issues which finally took him in the end. Two things about Jonas-- he loved, loved, loved his family, especially his grandson, Dylan. And he was the biggest wrestling fan. The entire family loves wrestling. Jonas and his son and grandson went to every fan event. They have more pictures with wrestling celebs than anyone I know!

Every year, little Dylan has a wrestling fundraiser for autism. This year's event is in Wooster on Saturday, May 14th. So, is you love the wrastlin' and want to have fun and support a great cause... it would be appreciated.

Miss you, Jonas!

Ruined

Written by

I admit it. I'm into porn. My favorite? Ruin Porn. I can easily fall down that rabbit hole of looking at picture after picture or video of abandoned places. For example, the aftermath of Rolling Acres Mall hurts my heart. Johnny Joo is a photographer, and he's captured so much ruin porn, like this:

Check out his Facebook page. It's sadly fascinating.

On The Run

Written by

If you can fly, get out! That's what two flamingos did 17 years ago. Some stormes rolled through a zoo in Kansas, and two flamingo residents freaked out and fled. Because their wings hadn't been clipped yet, they pink-tailed it out of there. One flamingo with the leg band #492 is still out there living his best life! He's been spotted on various street cameras over the years in a bunch of different states. He's been hanging with wild flamingos and other birds. He was last spotted in Texas. Hard to believe he's made it for this long. A part of me hopes to see #492 somewhere in our neck of the woods when the weather warms up. If you see our pink feathered friend, party-on!

I love flamingos. Next to the Great Blue Heron, they're my favorite. This is the closest thing I have to a flamingo...

Slow Ride

Written by

I love animals. They are so adorable. If you follow me on Instagram (@hausofv) you'll see my story featuring animals frequently. The older I get, the more appreciation I have for the other creatures that share our space. One animal I love-- sloths. They're just so chill. One sloth decided he wanted to zipline in Costa Rica. Well, he encountered a human who was ziplining as well. The video's gone viral. If you haven't seen it-- check it out here...

Fortunately, no human or sloth was injured. I would've grabbed the sloth and zipped with him! LOL

Danger, Danger!

Written by

Are there some intersections you go through where you just hold you breath? And there are many reasons for that. It may be challenging to see traffic, people may be speeding too much, or not paying attention... The most dangeorus intersection in all of Northeast Ohio is in Cleveland at Kinsman Rd. and 93rd St. There were 55 car crashes at that intersection alone in 2020. Summit County has five intersections that are crash-prone. Tallmadge Circle at South Ave. and Southeast Ave. is the worst, with 38 crashes. To see the other dangerous intersections in Summit County as well as other Northeast Ohio counties, click HERE.

Be careful out there!

Bring The Rock

Written by

These kids are the sweetest! And if you can help them, that would rock! The kids in the PACTS Special Education Program are students with special needs at Parma High School. Every year, they hold a luau in April. And every year, they try to get a Cleveland sports celebrity to join them but they've been unsuccessful. Boo. So, the kids decided to "go big or go home" by inviting their favorite celebrity-- The Rock. They put together a video recreating some of Dwayne Johnson's characters. If you can, please share their video on social media. Their goal is to spread the video in the hopes that The Rock will see it and make an appearance.

New Alcohol Brands...from Bands!

Written by

Band's and booze have went hand-and-hand for years...

2 of my favorites are putting their best drinks forward.

Kiss has the song 'Cold Gin' it only makes sense that they have a liquor to go with it.  Well check it out for $39.99 you can get a bottle of Kiss's Cold Gin.  Click Here To Check It Out!

AC/DC not to be out done...  Knuckle Bonz has "For Those About To Rock Ale" a 5.9% ABV Beer.  Click Here To Check It Out!

I would go with the beer, personally.  Gin tastes like pine trees to me.  I'd rather drink Sammy's Cabo Wabo... just saying...

Remember whatever you are drinking from one of our awesome band's or just your regular brand.  Remember Rock Irresponsibly!  But ALWAYS Drink Responsibly...

Rumors In the Air

Written by

Rumors. They can be fascinating. Or destructive. They can take on a life of their own. I had no idea that one of the most popular orign story rumors about Phil Collin's "In The Air Tonight" is a very dark tale. The rumor is/was that a few months before writing the song, Phil saw someone drowning and was unable to help. And that person died in the water. Okay... I thought we all knew the song was birthed from his breakup from his first wife. Which is true.

Read more about this song HERE. Some pretty cool brain nugs...

And while we're at it...

C'mon, let's play ball!

Written by

It's been a long time since baseball was America's pastime -- can you say, "Hello NFL?!?!" -- but is this latest work stoppage the proverbial nail in Major League Baseball's coffin?

It's early March.  Baseball is supposed to be here for us to remind us winter IS almost over;  sunshine and hot dogs await.

But while the billionaires duke it out with the millionaires, we become more and more apathetic toward the tradition that bonded so many fathers and sons, once upon a time.

Fortuntately, the lockout does not affect minor league baseball.  Our very own Akron RubberDucks get set to begin defense of their 2021 league championship at Canal Park in mere weeks.  Easy access to the games; easy parking; affordable enough to take the whole family.

And we'll see you out there on Saturday nights again this season for WONE Nights, complete with fireworks and giveaways.

You know what, maybe MINOR league baseball is still America's pastime....

Sexy Rock

Written by

How does that phrase go? "Sex, drugs, and rock & roll"? Those things seem to always be associated with rock music. But let's focus on the "sex" part. Troy L. Smith from cleveland.com compiled a list of the 40 Sexiest Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Songs. Zeppelin's on that list. So is Heart... and Bob Seger. Say What?

Written by

There are phrases that we use in coversation that have stood the test of time. But where did we get these phrases from in the first place? Mental Floss is one of my favorite go-to places for all kinds of random, interesting factoids. They broke down a handful of phrases that have dark origins. Oooh. Let's do this!

Phrase: Mad as a hatter

Origin: A plague ravaged the hatting industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fur felt was used in hats. That felt was treated with mercury nitrate. Workers exposed to the mercury suffered speech issues, tremors, hallucinations, and emotional issues. Eek! Thing is, using mercury on the felt wasn't banned until the 1940s, so-- a lot of craziness!

What about the phrases: Riding shotgun, take it with a grain of salt, meet a deadline, and more? Click HERE to get the scoop!
