I Want Candy

Written by

It's a myth that Asian folk don't eat sweets. Yes, with many Asian people being thinner than most it's a common belief. But let me tell ya-- we do have sweets. My mom is Korean, and I remember as a child loving rice candy. The candy would come in a cute box with a toy or sticker. The candy itself was delish-- an amber honey-ish, chewy substance wrapped in clear rice paper. It was weird at first not trying to "unwrap" the candy, because that's the Western thing to do. But the rice paper yummily melts in your mouth right before you start to savor the amber sweetness.

With the popularity of Squid Game, and the one challenge involving Dalgona Candy, many people have decided they want to try this treat. So here you go-- an easy way to make your own Dalgona. Whether you challenge someone to a game with dire consequences is up to you. LOL

Let's Have Some Fun!

Written by

It's Ben, thanks for rockin' with me 7-Midnight on 97.5 WONE!

I figured why not keep my blog light and fun.

Congrats to Nikki Sixx!!! He is on the New York Times Best Seller List again with his new book, The First 21... Nikki also said his next project could be with his wife Courtney as they want to write and release a children's book.  (Put a pin in that one.  I'll get back to you with my Crue children book titles....)  Actually how about:  Call The Doctor My  Tummy Doesn't Feelgood; Mommy's Shout at The Dirt Devil (a mommy vacuuming story); Legos, Legos, Legos!!!

Metallica announced they will have a Master's Class to give an education in how to be a successful band.  The virtual class is a membership seminar which costs $15 per month.

While you are contemplating if you will pony up the cash for the Master Class...  enjoy this mash-up... (which someone had a lot of time on their hands and we thank them for that!)

Ozzy and Sharon's Biopic about their relationship has been picked up by Sony.  His kids, Jack and Aimee are going to produce it...  The Prince of Darkness also announced that Zak Wylde will be on his next solo album.  Plus Ozzy just released an animated video that included his late friend Lemmy of Motorhead.

Next year you have to add this one to your Halloween Playlist... this one will make you Jump!

Foiled

Written by

I've always wondered why one side of the foil is shiny, and the other side dull. I never thought to ask before. I always cook with the shiny side up. But now, I just need to know. The thing is, there really is nothing magical about the foil sides. They're both the same. There's no right side or wrong side to use. They both are the exact same except for how they look.

Reynolds Wrap gives up the skinny: "We mill two layers in contact with each other at the same time, because if we didn't, the foil would break during the milling process. Where the foil is in contact with another layer, that's the ‘dull' side. The ‘shiny' side is the side milled without being in contact with another sheet of metal."

Feel free to use whichever side makes you happy.

The more you know...

Slow & Low

Written by

Craig mentioned the other day that he got a crockpot, which to me is one of the greatest inventions. It is virtually impossible to ruin a meal made in a crockpot. And, it can turn the toughest cuts of meat into a melt-in-your-mouth delight.

I love lasagna, but HATE the labor-intensive task of assembling one. So, this will satisfy your lasagna craving without all the work (and no boiling and drying noodles!) Now, you won't get perfect squares with this, but you will get just as many dark, crispy cheese-edge parts. Win!

Crockpot Lasagna

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (I use beef/pork mix)
6 lasagna noodles, uncooked
1 jar spaghetti sauce (15 ounces)
2 cups cottage cheese
2 cups shredded Mozzarella (I use a Mozzarella/Provolone mix)
Grated Parmesan

Instructions:
Brown beef and drain. Spoon 1 cup of the spaghetti sauce in the bottom of a 4 quart crockpot. Mix remaining sauce with beef. Place two uncooked noodles on sauce in crockpot. Spread a third of the meat mix on top of noodles. Spread a cup of cottage cheese over the meat. Sprinkle ½ cup of the shredded cheese over the cottage cheese. Add another layer of uncooked noodles (2), a third of the meat mixture, the remaining cottage cheese, and a ½ cup of the shredded cheese. Place another layer of two uncooked noodles, meat mixture and shredded cheese. Sprinkle Parmesan on top. Cook on low for 4 hours.

Food + Football = Winning. Sometimes the best part of the game is the food, especially if the game isn't going the way you'd like. Try this one out for your next gathering, or keep it all for yourself for your next gnosh sesh.

BUFFALO CHICKEN PULL-APART BREAD

Ingredients:
4 ounces cream cheese
1/3 cup hot sauce*
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 1/2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, divided
3 green onions, thinly sliced
9 ounces cooked chicken, shredded
1 (16-oz.) tube buttermilk biscuit dough

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a standard-size loaf pan liberally with cooking spray. Set aside.

In a bowl, mix together cream cheese, hot sauce, mayonnaise, honey, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt, and garlic powder until well combined. Add 1 cup cheddar cheese and 2/3 of the sliced green onions. Mix to combine. Fold chicken into mixture.

Remove biscuit dough from tube and separate into individual biscuits. Slice each biscuit in half horizontally. Take each biscuit half and press into 3.5-inch wide rounds. Spread 1 heaping spoonful of the chicken mixture evenly onto the surface of a biscuit half. Making a stack, layer another half-biscuit round and heaping spoonful of chicken mixture on top of the first, and repeat process until you place the final biscuit layer on top. Do not top the final layer with chicken. Invert this stack sideways into prepared loaf pan, gently pressing to fit the mold of the pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake until puffed and lightly golden around edges, about 45 minutes

Remove aluminum foil, sprinkle surface with remaining 1/4 cup cheese and bake until cheese is melted, about 15 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before removing loaf from pan and garnishing with remaining chopped green onions.

Advent-urous

Written by

The holidays are right around the corner (I wish time would slow down just a smidge!) One of my favorite childhood memories of the holidays is getting that tasty chocolate advent calendar. What kid doesn't like to get a guaranteed chocolate treat every day in December!?!?

As I got older, I didn't "advent" anymore. And then suddenly, we adults get to have fun with advent calendars just for us! There are wine ones, and beer ones, and cheese ones. And some cool ones like these that you can find on Amazon: A LEGO Star Wars advent calendar, and a Beatles one.

First Day of School

I'm so excited for my "first day of school"-- happy to be back at The Home of Rock & Roll! Looking forward to our hangin' out during the afternoon. As you can see, I'm ready with my trusty Trapper Keeper. LOL

For all you grown kids, you can still buy one. I got mine at Walmart. My inner 80s kid was so thrilled! Gonna stay forever young, that's for sure! What is something great from your school days? I hope you have a lot of good memories.

Real Men DO Wear Pink

Written by

Yes, that's me... Ryan Lang, the news guy. And yes, I own a pink body suit... It's true.

But what's also true is that Real Men Wear Pink. That's the American Cancer Society campaign to raise awareness and money to support the American Cancer Society's mission and save more lives than ever before from breast cancer through the month of October, which (coincidentally?) is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

My Mom, Rosalie, fought through a long battle with the disease and unfortunately she passed back in 1999. She fought hard and she fought well, and I don't like to think of it as her "losing her battle" with cancer. No, I think she won.

Mom

My Mom won in the sense that she helped so many other women suffering from the same disease through her work with the American Cancer Society. She won in the sense that she took the disease to the 12th round and gave it everything she had. She won in the sense that she never, not once, let the disease define who she was and how she would live. My Mom was a fighter and not only for herself or her family. She was a fighter for the woman who maybe didn't have all the support she had and needed someone to stand in their corner.

So for my Mom and for all of the other Moms and Sisters and Daughters and Aunts and Neighbors and Friends I wear pink. And I proudly support the American Cancer Society.

Thank YOU for your support: Click here to donate to Ryan's Real Men Wear Pink Campaign

A Band Member's Tribute to Michael Stanley

Written by

Marc Lee Shannon is out with a new song entitled "Steady On" which is a tribute to the late Michael Stanley. Shannon, a native son of Akron and 1977 graduate of St. Vincent/St. Mary High School, had been a member of Michael Stanley's Resonators since 1996 and was a featured player on over 20 albums.

The idea for "Steady On" came about when Michael was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer last year. The two musicians had planned to collaborate on the song but sadly, that didn't happen. Following Michael's death in March, Shannon finished the project as a way to honor his fallen friend. "The song is deeply personal to me," Shannon said. "It's about how life is not a straight line. All you can do is just go onward. It's a memorial to my friend and an exploration of what people can do with grief."

"Steady On" will be among the tracks on Shannon's new release "Lucky 7" which drops on November 10th. The title and release date of the full length project hold great significance to Shannon as it will mark the 7th anniversary of his sobriety, a lifetime quest which had Michael's full support. Until then, take a look at the attached video which features other long-time Michael Stanley collaborators as well as some very special gear left to Marc by Michael.

Watts?! No Charlie?

Written by

Next month's long-awaited kick-off of the Rolling Stones "No Filter" tour, (which sadly will not be coming to Cleveland), will be minus one of its main players. News is drummer Charlie Watts won't be able to make the trek following an unspecified medical procedure.

The 80-year-old Watts wasn't thrilled by the decision but explained that this is what's best for his health and the band. "For once my timing has been a little off. I am working hard to get fully fit but I have today accepted on the advice of the experts that this will take a while."

Watts will hand over the sticks to understudy Steve Jordan who says, "no one will be happier than me to give up my seat on the drum-riser as soon as Charlie tells me he is good to go."

"Dusty Gave Me The Directive"

Written by

During what was the first show since the untimely passing of Dusty Hill, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons introduced the "new guy" Elwood Francis, apparently at the direction of Hill.

Watch the announcement from Gibbons below:

On a personal note, I've been listening to more ZZ Top than ever before and I'm quickly realizing that they've been one of my favorite bands for a long time without me even realizing it.

Long live the Texas Legend!

The Guardians?

Written by

The Cleveland Indians are no more... Well, they will be no more after the 2021 season.

We knew it was coming, we just weren't sure how it would be packaged. Now, we know.

The Cleveland Guardians. That's the new name unveiled by the club after months, well really years of speculation and polling and consternation, etc., etc.

While I've heard some say the new name doesn't evoke any real feelings, I've got to disagree as I look at my social media feeds and all I see is feelings... Very strong feelings, one way or another.

Some steadfast, tried and true "Indians" fans (Likely the same ones that still call it "The Jake,") are holding strong, saying they'll "always be the Tribe."

Well, that's not the case... In fact they will never be The Tribe again. That's the whole idea of a name change... The "change" part.

BUT, who am I to question anyone's fanhood? Peope celebrate and castigate as they see fit (insert shrugging guy emoji here).

I will say that I'm gonna support the Cleveland team, no matter what they call themselves. Because what are my other options? The Reds? Meh... The PIRATES?!?! No. Thanks. The Yank- OK, I'm not even gonna finish that thought!

And with that I say GO GUARDIANS!! See ya at the next Dollar Dog Night!

OH! One more thing: what's up with that logo? My opinion only, but that could use a little tweeking. *yeesh*

Maggot Brain Turns 50

Written by

50 years ago this week, Funkadelic released an album the title track of which would become the cornerstone of late night radio listening while I was in my teens. The song was "Maggot Brain" and it was the 10:24 long lead off song. Even by the more progressive radio standards of those days, it was way too long for regular daytime rotation and was relegated to airplay about once a week, usually weekend nights around 2AM. But we all knew when it would be played and when to tune in. If we needed an earlier fix, we'd search out that one kid who could play it on guitar. In my quiet little Parma neighborhood, it was Mike Beeble and he had it down. We'd gather in his basement on Gabriella Drive and listen. It was like a scene from "That 70s Show" minus the comedy.

Legend has it producer George Clinton was tripping while instructing guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he'd just learned of his own mother's death. Some reports say Maggot Brain was Hazel's nickname but a more macbre explanation of the title is a reference to Clinton finding his brother's decomposed dead body, skull cracked, in a Chicago apartment. Yikes! The song was done in one take.

So happy birthday, Maggot Brain. And to celebrate, here's a link if you want to relive the memories without having to wait until Saturday night at 2AM.

Tom Petty fans can get up close & personal with some of his duds and one of his guitars in a very special exhibit currently on display. It's the suit he wore and guitar he played during his Super Bowl XLII Halftime performance in 2008 and is part of the Rock Hall's  “Biggest Show on Turf: 55 Years of Halftime Shows” exhibit.

During the performance, Petty & Co. tore through their biggest hits such as "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin,” and “Runnin' Down a Dream.” Was Petty nervous about the prospect of playing on such a large, guitar-shaped stage with over 100-million people watching world wide? “A lot of it is just trying to remember the next chord,” Petty joked at the pregame press conference. “We play for the audience and hopefully that’ll take care of everything else.” The 12-minute halftime show was later nominated for an Emmy Award.

The Rock Hall is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended summer hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in July and August. Purchase tickets now at RockHall.com

Ohio Trooper Saves Man Choking on WHAT?!

With Great Pizza Comes Great Responsibility

Written by

There's only been one Akron Pizza Fest, but I can absolutely tell you that there should be more.

And now we have word that there will be more this year!

Organizers have set Labor Day weekend as the day they'll return to Lock 3 for the second annual Akron Pizza Fest that was forced to take last summer off due to the pandemic.

Back in 2019, the innaugural event kicked off with live music, entertainment, games, prizes, and so much more family friendly fun. I actually had the honor of being a guest judge for the Best Pizza contest, and let me tell you I've never eaten more pizza in one sitting in my life. But it was a wonderful time and the pizza was even better. I felt my judgement was fair, balanced, and accurate, even though it was really hard. All of the entries were fantastic!

So take my word for it, Lock 3 is the place to be this Labor Day weekend for Akron Pizza Fest II! Check out AkronPizzaFest.com for all of the details and we'll see you there!

Legend of Late Night Hanging It Up

Written by

Conan O'Brien, you either loved him or you couldn't stand him... But you've got to respect the man for the footprint he's left on late night television.

Nearly 30 years Conan's been hosting late night, cracking jokes, getting real with celebrity guests, and without a doubt having a blast doing it. The genius of Conan, if you're asking me, is that he was so smart, but wasn't afraid of going lowbrow.

Graduate of Harvard where he was president of the Harvard Lampoon, Conan earned his stripes at the writing desk, putting together comedy sketches and shows for Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and more.

He graduated to late night with his own "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" show which was very poorly reviewed when it first aired in 1993 and even well after. But the fans, O'Brien said, kept the show on the air. He has said on several occasions that the show would have absolutely been canceled were it not for the loyal fans.

From Late Night, Conan went on to "The Tonight Show," taking over for Jay Leno after his retirement... But then, Leno came BACK to late night TV in the form of a new 30-minute show that would air on NBC prior to "The Tonight Show" with Conan, thus moving him to a 12:05 time slot, which was less than desirable. Conan didn't like it. Leno wasn't budging on his deal. So Conan parted ways with NBC and Leno was back hosting "The Tonight Show."

Then, Conan was ousted! Per his contract, he wasn't allowed on any other network station.

But then... THIS (See video below):

Conan was back on Late Night and everything was right in the world. He even had a good laugh about being totally screwed by NBC and Leno. Several good laughs, as you can tell from the hilarious video that you should probably watch again.

Now, it's all come to an end as Conan is retiring from late night (for good?) and focusing on his podcast "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" which is absolutely hilarious!

While the late night world will miss you, Conan, we cannot wait to see what's next.

Put Some Lips & Tongue on Your Underwear

Written by

The Rolling Stones continue to demonstrate that over 50 years on, they still find unique ways to market their brand. The rock legends have recently partnered with the MeUndies company to launch a line of underwear and other clothing items emblazoned with The Stones' famous red lips-and-tongue logo. See the line here. Caution, it may be NSFW.

There is also a contest giving away the entire Stones line to three lucky winners via the MeUndies Instagram page but you'll need to post a photo or video of yourself rocking out in your underwear. The winners will be selected randomly on June 30. So drop your pants, put on some Stones' tunes, and show them your moves like Jagger. Good Luck
