My Memories of Woodstock

Written by
Woodstock turns 50 this weekend and everyone's talking about it. My memories aren't as vivid as others. I was not there. I was nine and heading into 4th grade. My parents wouldn't have taken me even if I'd asked and my brother and sister, (15 and 12 respectively), didn't go either. So my memories of this seminal event in Bethel, NY before nearly a half a million people was probably limited to whatever the Huntley-Brinkley Report covered as a news story. I came to appreciate it more well after the fact after seeing the movie. Hendrix, a 22 year old Carlos Santana, The Who playing "Tommy," Joe Cocker, Richie Havens (!), John Sebastian w/out the Lovin' Spoonful, The Dead, The Airplane, and Sha Na Na (?) It was as billed, "3 Days of Peace & Music." All those people converged on Max Yasgur's farm to transcend the political bitterness and bleak world situation of the year before and soothe themselves with music. Happy Anniversary, Woodstock and Happy Anniversary to the blanket draped couple from the iconic picture who are still together. (photo credit: Burk-Uzzle)
