Your Vote Matters

Written by

I'm going to avoid getting on a soap box here but it's widely known that nearly 50% of registered voters did not vote in the 2016 general election so I'd like to offer this reminder. The Ohio primary election is March 17th and if you're not registered to vote, the deadline to do so is this Tuesday, February 18th. In my case, I recently moved out of my former precinct so I had to update my information. This was done fast and easy on the Summit County's Board of Elections' website, (if you live in another county, Google Board of Elections and find yours). Click the link below if you need to register or change your information. Be an active member in our democracy.

Exercise your right to VOTE

RIP Stan Piatt

Written by
Long-time WNIR morning man Stan Piatt passed away today. He was 68 and battled cancer for a lot longer than was expected because Stan was a fighter. I never worked with him but we ran across one another on occasion and I found him to be a cheery guy. My favorite Stan memory goes back to when he was still on 'NIR and I was doing TV23 Weather. It was the 80s so I wore that era's "hair-helmet TV-guy" coif. Stan used to poke fun at me about my hair on his show saying it had to be a piece, that it wasn't real. Trust me, it was. A lot of gel and spray made it so. One night during our broadcast, Anchorman Mark Williamson mentioned Stan's pokes at me and I threw down the gauntlet. I challenged Stan to meet me anywhere at anytime and I'd let him comb my hair in public to prove it was real. He accepted the challenge. The day came at a charity bowling event. The two of us were there. It was the first time I witnessed how in love Stan's audience was with Stan. It was as if I was the enemy. He never did comb my hair that day but did lean into me and say, "You know this was all in good fun, right?" Of course I did. Kind of a radio publicity stunt. One more side of this story bears recounting. At the time all this was playing out on air, my wife and I lived in an apartment complex run by Stan's parents. We told them we'd be moving on when our lease was up . His Mother leaned in to us and asked, "I hope you're not leaving because Stan made fun of your hair." Of course it wasn't. It was all just a bit. Like other legendary Akron radio personalities, we may have been competitors but never really felt competitive around one another. It's a fraternity of respect and I had respect for what Stan did. You'll be missed my friend. (Photo Credit: Pam Darkow from Stan Piatt's Facebook page)

Competition With Class

Written by

They say, "to the victor go the spoils" but the closing of a Montrose area grocery store brought out the class in one of its competitors. Earth Fare, whose goods lean more towards the natural and organic, announced it would be shutting down its entire chain. Read the story here

Akron like most cities has its share of grocery stores, nearly a half a dozen or more by my count, but Earth Fare came in to cater to a niche market of people looking for more unique and perhaps healthier brands. To that end, its main competition was Whole Foods and the  locally-owned Mustard Seed Market with two locations on the opposite sides of town. MSM stepped up and released the above statement wishing its former competitor well. Pure class. Now yes I know it's also a bit of an advertising ploy to woo EF's customers over to them but I just wanted to take the time to recognize MSM's sense of fair play and respect to others who are trying to suceed in this era when seemingly everything can be bought on line and delivered to your door

A Business Logo Means A Lot

Written by

A business logo says a lot. I used ours as the artwork to this blog. Once you see it, you recognize us immediately and you know what we stand for. You really don't need to think about it much more. This is why companies place so much emphasis on the image they project. It enables them to get their message out to us, their customers. A recent survey was taken to determine what logos are the most recognizeable. See the list of the Top 30 below and I'll bet you'll have no trouble being able to visualize the logo just from reading their name.

1. Apple
2. McDonald’s
3. Coca-Cola
4. Nike
5. Starbucks
6. Google
7. Facebook
8. Adidas
9. Amazon
10. YouTube
11. Pepsi
12. Mercedes
13. Disney

Super Binge LIV

Written by

Super Bowl LIV is this Sunday and if you don't care who wins, it becomes a fun event complete with socializing, commercial watching, and eating, pleny of eating...and drinking. Here's the "Super Bowl; By The Numbers" as composed by Wallethub.com.

The average Super Bowl party-goer consumes a whopping 6,000 calories, from pregame to night's end, the site says. That's about two-and-a-half times the recommended daily caloric intake for the average man, and three times the intake for women.  We will consume 1.4 billion chicken wings, 11.2 million pounds potato chips and eight million pounds of guacamole.

No surprise here, there's a 50% increase in pizza orders on Super Bowl Sunday, with 67% more pizza is eaten on Super Bowl Sunday than on the average day. Pizza runs a close second behind wings as our favorite food during the Big Game. Now onto what we wash it all down with.

90% more beer is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than an average day. $1.3 billion is spent on beer and cider on Super Bowl Sunday.  $597 million is spent on wine, and $503 million is spent on hard liquor. Not surprisingly, one in ten people will miss work the day after the Super Bowl. Some have floated the idea that Super Bowl Monday become a national holiday for just such reason. Either that or moving the game to Saturday which would undoubtedly cut down Sunday Service attendance.

Party hearty everyone and...Go Browns!

Kobe's Little Known Talent

Written by

It is almost an understatement to use the word stunned by the shocking news of the death of LA Lakers' star Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna. There were two of the nine souls who perished when the helicopter crashed in Calabassas, CA. over the weekend. Also lost in the accident was John Altobelli, the head Orange Coast College baseball coach. There is a lot to say about Bryant both on and off the basketball court but a friend shared the following video on social media. It shows Bryant playing the classical piece "Moonlight Sonata" with a stringed quartet. I found this fascinating. The story goes Kobe learned piano late in life to serenade his wife. Click this link and treat yourself to a side of this future Hall of Famer that like me, maybe you didn't know about.
