Dave Grohl; A Man of Many Talents

Written by

Is there anything Dave Grohl can't do or at least won't try? He and his band Foo Fighters were nominated for Rock Hall induction and if they get in, it'll be Grohl's second go-round. The first time of course was with Nirvana. The Foos are among many artists taking part in a charity raffle to raise money for the #ILoveLive campaign in support of live music crew members amid the COVID-19 pandemic. And now, Grohl can be heard doing his best Barry Gibb falsetto on a cover version of the Bee Gees' classic "You Should Be Dancing." Click this link to hear it and learn how it all came together

We're witnessing somewhat of a recent Bee Gees revival after an HBO special brought them back into our musical consciousness. It's a great retrospective and proves these guys should not be defined by "Saturday Night Fever" alone. And now Barry Gibb, the last surviving brother, has recorded a duet album of Bee Gees' classics with some heavy hitters in Nashville. Also worth a listen.

My Thoughts on the Rock Hall Nominees

Written by

Each year when the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announces its list of nominees, it spurs a vitriolic debate, not unlike something from the political arena. In fact, many detractors even claim the considered artists are picked solely for political reasons. I don't want to go down that road with this blog post. I just want to take a look at the official list and share who interests me in an observational manner. Strictly my opinion and in no particular order.

The New York Dolls, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, and Rage Against The Machine stand out for me from the rockier side of the genre and any of those bands are induction worthy. From the "why aren't they in already" file comes Carole King, Tina Turner, and of course...Todd Rundgren. Devo? Sure!! The others I've not mentioned get a shrug from me because their art doesn't speak to me as much as it does to others. I do want to give Kate Bush an honorable mention here because I've always liked her stuff and she was somewhat discovered by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, a man whose opinion I trust.

I admit it will be difficult to whittle these down to my personal top five so I'm going to chew on it for a while and do a follow-up in a later blog but you can let your voice be heard! Here's a link to the Rock Hall's Fan Vote page. You can vote once daily through the end of April. We'll find out who this year's inductees will be in early May.

Marty: An NFL Legacy

Written by

If your Browns fandom dates back to the team's heyday of the mid-1980's, you're familiar with the name Marty Schottenheimer.

If not, first, shame on you, and second, here's a bit of a history lesson...

Marty Schottenheimer was defensive coordinator for the Browns in 1980, officially taking over as head coach mid-season 1984, replacing Sam Rutilgiano after a 1-7 start to the season. The very next year, in 1985, Schottenheimer (and starting quarterback Bernie Kosar) led the Browns to an AFC Central Division title and a Divisional Playoff berth. The team would eventually lose to Dan Marino and the Dolphins, but the future looked bright!

And it was.

The next season the Browns finished 12-4, again winning the AFC Central, and this time making it to the AFC Championship game where they'd face some guy and the Denver Broncos... We'll leave it at that, as we already know what happened.

The following year, in 1987, the Browns again won the division and again made it to the AFC Championship game... Where they would play that guy and the Denver Broncos... again... And again, I'll leave it at that.

The '88 season was marred by injuries and the Browns, while still managing a 10-6 record, came in second in the division to the Houston Oilers, eventually losing to the Oilers in that Wild Card round, thus marking the end of Schottenheimer's tenure in Cleveland.

But that wasn't the end of Marty. He'd go on to coach another 17 years, tallying 200 career wins over his career as head coach, enough for seventh all time on the wins list for NFL head coaches.

As for his legacy and the coaches that learned under Marty Schottenheimer, well here's the impressive list:

Lindy Infante

Bruce Arians (who just wone the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Marc Trestman

Bill Cowher... Yeah, him.

Tony Dungy (Super Bowl winner with the Colts in the 2006-07)

Herm Edwards

Gunther Cunningham

Mike McCarthy (Super Bowl winner with the Packers in the 2010-11 season)

Cam Cameron

Tony Sparano

Hue Jackson (Where do I know that name?)

Rob Chudzinski (Oh yeah, that guy!)

And that's it... But what a list!

Marty Schottenheimer passed away this week at the age of 77 near his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, due to complications from Alzheimer's Disease. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pat, his children Kristen and Brian, and his four grandchildren.

Born and raised in Berea, Matt Spatz is a die hard Indians, Cavs, Buckeyes and, of course, Browns fan -- once when Spatz was a kid, Browns CB Thom Darden stole a french fry from him at the McDonald's in Berea (true!).  On Sundays in the spring and summer, you will find Spatz on the diamond at Old Forge or Waterworks Park in the Falls or Summit Lake or the Ballpark at Hudson manning second base for the Crystal Clinic Indians.

Spatz and his wife, Lisa, stay busy with their 4 kids and beloved four-legged friend, Carl.  And, of course, Spatz loves all the great classic rock here on 97.5 WONE, with his favorites being Rush, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and Queen!  "Spatz & Amanda In The Morning," 5:30 - 10:00 weekdays!

Ohio Loves the Hooch!

Written by

2020 has been rough on a lot people, but Ohioans more than others?

If you're basing your answer the amount of booze we consumed in the Buckeye State last year, then yeah, maybe!

According to the data from the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, sales of hard liquor were up roughly 19 percent in 2020 over 2019 and 27 percent over 2018! All told, Ohioans bought about $1.5 BILLION (WITH A B) dollars worth of liquor!

A lot of that probably had to do with quarantining and Stay-At-Home orders and such, but man... that's a lot of hooch!!!

Specifically, Ohioans were buying more tequila than ever before, as more than 1.7 million gallons of that nasty stuff was sold in 2020. Vodka sales were the highest, as they have been for a long time now, and American whiskey came in second in total sales.

Also increased, we can all assume, were drunk dials to ex-lovers, regretable social media posts, prayers to the porcelean gods (EWWWW), and lost wallets / keys / cellphones.

No Clydesdales! Wassup With That?

Written by

Super Bowl LV (55, if your roman numeral recognition is rusty), is set. Tom Brady, the NFL's elder statesman, and the TB Bucaneers take on young football phenom Pat Mahomes and the KC Chiefs. This is going to look like so many other Super Bowl games with last year's winning team taking on a guy who's marking his tenth appearance in one. Are you bored? Are you jaded? Has your enthusiasm faded?

There will however be much that looks different about this Super Bowl. First off, only 22,000 in attendance, a mere third of what Raymond James' Stadium holds. Gone are the classic rock artists for the halftime show, instead we get the Weeknd, (and that's not a typo).

If you watch the "big game" for the commercials like so many of us do, you may be surprised to learn that some iconic brands will not be seen. For instance Coke and Pepsi brands will not advertise and now, nor will Budweiser. That's not to say you'll see no Bud brands but the old faithful, Red Jacket Buds will not be on. No Clydesdales, no bullfrogs, no "wassup!" But there is actual good reasoning behind why Anheuser-Busch made this call. Read more here.

Paul Brown Museum display closing soon

Written by

In this day of pro and college team name changes, one thing remains true - the Cleveland Browns will always be the Browns because of one man, Paul Brown. Some consider him to be the father of modern day football and we can claim him as one of our own. From his days in Massillon to his days of being the head coach for the team that still bears his name, then on to the Cincinnati Bengals this man developed the game all right here in Ohio, the birthplace of the NFL.

As this year's season winds down and the Browns' better days seem to once again be ahead us, take time to visit the Paul Brown display at the Massillon Museum before it closes on Februay 14th. Click the link to learn more.

Happy National Disc Jockey Day

Written by

It's National Disc Jockey Day! One of those silly, made-up holidays that Hallmark had nothing to do with. But I smile every year when it rolls around and I take a moment to celebrate the career path I chose over forty years ago, from a love of the medium, sparked in me as a young boy. So today, I'd like to take this blog space to celebrate and remember some of the "jocks" whom I worked with, learned from, and most of all, looked up to. There are great stories behind each of these pictures. Message me on the WONE Facebook page if you'd like to hear them.

Here We Go, Brownies...!

Written by

If you answered "Woof-Woof" then this blog's for you. The Cleveland Browns' stellar season continues this Sunday when the "good guys" land in KC to take on last year's Super Bowl champs. It's the Mayfield-Mahomes Match-Up and it's going to be great. What a weird season, though. And it figures that long-suffering Browns' fans have had to watch from afar as their beloved team made it into their first post season action in many years. I don't know how many of us would have traveled to KC to see the game in person, even in a good year, but the Browns' organization is doing something cool tomorrow for fans who want to get into the spirit and they're using the stadium as a back drop. Click here for the details about a "First Energy Stadium Drive-Through Rally."

Go Browns!!

Happy Birthday Syd

Written by

Perhaps one of the most tragic stories in Rock and Roll lore is the story of Syd Barrett, founding member of Pink Floyd.

Syd, whose given name was Roger Keith Barrett, named the band and was the original frontman for the band he co-founded in 1965.

His short-lived musical career only accounted for the band's debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and a portion of Pink Floyd's second album "A Saucerful of Secrets."

After a mental breakdown, that some attributed to prolonged use of psychedelic drugs throughout much of the 60's, Syd faded into obscurity, not resurfacing for three decades.

At one point while post-Barrett-Floyd was recording "Wish You Were Here" at Abbey Road Studios, an unrecognizable Barrett waltzed in during a taping of the song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", a song that was written and dedicated to Syd Barrett himself. Barrett had put on a lot of weight and shaved his head, again unrecognizable to anyone that had known him years before, including the band. After some time, as the story goes, Roger Waters finally recognized Barrett and asked him what he thought of the song, to which Barrett replied that is sounded "kind of old."

Barrett passed away on July 7th, 2006, at the age of 60. Today, January 6th, 2021, would have been his 75th birthday.

GNR Covers Cornell

Written by

Guns N'Roses has never shied away from a good cover version. In fact, they've had some big hits with them. "Live and Let Die," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," pretty much the entire "Spaghetti Incident" album from 1993 to name a few.

Last year while playing at the Tennessee Exit 111 Festival, they borrowed "Black Hole Sun" from Soundgarden and did it live on stage. Personally, I'm not crazy about it. I think it's tough to match the late Chris Cornell's intensity. That, and it's one of my favorite Soundgarden songs so don't mess with perfection, know what I mean?

But don't take my word for it. Click here to see for yourself. The video is about thiry minutes long but "Black Hole Sun" can be found about seven minutes in.

Happy Birthday, WONE!

We've had a little tradition here at WONE. Mountain's Leslie West dead at 75

Written by

Guitarist Leslie West has died. The leader of the band Mountain, known for the hit "Mississippi Queen," had gone into cardiac arrest on Monday in Florida, and died of an apparent heart attack today. He was 75. Click to read the full story from Rolling Stone Magazine

Were you in downtown Akron when he played at Cascade Plaza for a 4th of July weekend celebration many years ago? I was and I had the humbling pleasure to bring him up on stage. Here's how it went down.

I was waiting backstage for my cue to go up and intro the band. What I didn't know was West was already on stage waiting for me! His walk onto the stage had gone unnoticed by most of the stage hands because he walked slowly, having had the lower part of his right leg amputated because of diabetes. Next thing I know, someone was yelling at me to get up there and do my job so I sprang into action. I offered a clumsy apology when I came face to face with an angry West who was certainly not there to wait on the local radio DJ to say, "Ladies & Gentlemen ~ Leslie West & Mountain."

He gave me some advice that I'll never forget and abide by to this day. He pointed to the center stage microphone and told me to use that one to make my announcements. Then he barked, "And don't touch the effing mic!" although he didn't say "effing." He was not as tall as me so when I approached the center stage mic, I had to squat down a little to bring him up, hands at my side because I was not about to adjust that "effing mic."

End of the "Road" for Sammy Hagar

Sammy Hagar is ending his "Rock & Roll Road Trip" series this Sunday night with a special hour-long series-finale that will air live on the AXS network starting at 9 p.m. The show will feature his favorite moments over the show's 5-year run, clips of artists he's interviewed and jammed with, some never seen footage and of course, some bloopers. Hagar says he set out to do one season of "Rock & Roll Road Trip" just to see if he could do it and somehow stretched it to five.

David Lee Roth released a new solo single over the weekend and dedicated it to his late bandmate Eddie Van Halen. The song is called "Somewhere over the Rainbow Bar and Grill" and celebrates their early days hanging out at the club of the same name on the famous Sunset Strip. This was back  in the days before Van Halen became superstars. Click the link to check it out, (and see if you catch the borrowed lyric from Elton John's "Crocodile Rock.") RIP, Spencer Davis

Written by

Another legendary musician will now be playing in Heaven's Rock & Roll Band. Spencer Davis, leader and guitarist of the popular 1960s British beat band The Spencer Davis Group, died in a hospital on Monday while being treated for pneumonia. He was 81. The band formed in 1963 and boasted the talents of Steve Winwood who would later go on to join Traffic and Blind Faith. Winwood's older brother Muff was also in The Spencer Davis Group and legend has it Mother Winwood insisted Muff join the band so he could keep an eye out for his very young, very talented, boy-genius of a brother.

Check out this video of their biggest hit "Gimme Some Lovin'". You can clearly see how much fun they were having shooting it and who can resist Steve Winwood's soulful vocals and that screaming Hammond B3 organ. Rest in peace, Spencer Davis.
